Spencerport’s Rolling Refuse Container Program FAQ’s

What is a rolling refuse container?
It is a green 96 gallon roll out refuse container with a lid, one piece handle, wheels and a 10 year manufacturers’ warranty. Each container will be numbered and assigned to your address.

Why is the Village requiring rolling refuse containers?
Employee health, safety and efficiency are a major consideration. Many residents have wanted to use the larger rolling containers to eliminate multiple trips to the curb but because of their size and weight, they cannot be safely lifted by employees. New equipment is now in place to lift and dump Village issued containers. These easy to roll containers can hold more than the 3 cans previously allowed now, are less likely to blow around in the wind and provide a uniform and neat street appearance.

Do I have to buy a rolling refuse container?
Yes, the village of Spencerport instituted a local law regulating the storage and removal of solid waste which requires all homeowners to use the 96 gallon rolling refuse container that is sold by the village, regardless of the amount of trash generated.

Who owns the refuse container?
The homeowner owns the rolling refuse container. If your rolling refuse container gets damaged, please call the DPW to see if it can be repaired. The resident is responsible to periodically clean the rolling refuse container. If you move you are free to take it with you.

What can go into the new rolling refuse container?
Up to 150 pounds of normal household trash in bags and /or loose construction waste from minor household improvements made by homeowner. No rocks, concrete or grass clippings. No paints, oil or other hazardous or flammable waste. No contractor debris and nothing with Freon.

What do I do if I have more than fits in the rolling refuse container?
Stickers for additional garbage are for sale at the village office for $2.00 per container. A bulk pile pick up is also available for purchase for $50.00.

Can the rolling refuse container I bought from the Home Improvement store be picked up?
Only rolling refuse containers purchased from the Village are acceptable for refuse collection.

What happens if my refuse container gets damaged?
Some damage will be covered by your warranty; if the DPW cannot repair your rolling refuse container it will be replaced.
The village will supply a loner and return your rolling refuse container to the manufacturer. If the damaged is covered by the warranty the village will get you a new rolling refuse from inventory.
What if my rolling refuse container is stolen?
The rolling refuse container is your property, you should handle it in the same way you would handle any other stolen property. Each rolling refuse container will be numbered, keep a copy for your records. The village will also maintain a list of homes with containers.

What if my refuse cart is stolen?
The rolling refuse container is your property, you should handle it in the same way you would handle any other stolen property. Each rolling refuse container will be numbered, keep a copy for your records. The village will also maintain a list of homes with containers.

Can I have 2 or more rolling refuse containers?
The village will collect trash from one rolling refuse container per parcel. If you generate trash in excess of one rolling refuse container, contact The Village office at 352-4771 regarding stickers, multiple containers or a dumpster.
